Better Not Perfect: Cinnamon Buns and a Heartbreaking Discovery
I am just now sitting down to write today, and it is already 5:00 PM! What better way to spend Happy Hour?
We weren't entirely sure what we wanted to do today. Lots of things went through our minds, but they didn't get very far because we started our morning at Nancy's Bakery—and that's where the day truly began.
My nutrition has hit an all-time low between last night and today! We did manage to get the fresh bread we wanted—a loaf of Whole Wheat Sourdough that looks fantastic. But right alongside that and our usual coffee, there were these delicious pecan cinnamon buns staring at us. We couldn't resist and ordered two. I indulged in about two-thirds of mine and saved the rest for later, which I happily finished this afternoon.
Could you resist these? I'm blaming Paige—Paige, you know who you are! You could never resist a cinnamon bun, and I usually can, but somehow I caught your bug! Paige is a TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) friend. We’ve both reached our weight goals and become KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) members. We try to avoid such extravagant foods, but every once in a while... you know, it's hard to be perfect. We try to be Better, Not Perfect, and that is exactly why I still belong to TOPS!
Toward the end of our guilty treat, a couple at the next table, Allison and John, struck up a conversation with us. The next thing I knew, we were yakking away. They told us about a boat that had recently sunk and been brought into nearby Jack’s Boatyard, where their own boat is currently on the hard.
I told them about our friends, Dave and Karon, and how they had lost their keel in the Copelands, mentioning that their boat was on the hard somewhere nearby.
They said, "That's the one."
I hadn’t realized until that moment that it had actually sunk, as I haven’t heard the whole story yet. The boat's name is Ragtime.
A Total Heartache at the Boatyard
Allison and John were heading back to the boatyard and asked if we wanted to walk with them. Of course we did! Our day was now unfolding exactly as it should. We chatted about so much on the one-kilometer walk there, but when we finally arrived, we were met with a total heartache.
Ragtime has suffered an incredible amount of damage. I wonder if she actually went all the way under, but I'm certain she turned completely sideways in the water after losing her keel with nothing left to stabilize her. I couldn't help but wonder what Dave and Karon must have gone through during the terrifying process of losing their boat.
Our newfound friends had talked to the person in charge at the yard, who filled them in on the backstory. Apparently, Karon and Dave had just brought Ragtime to the boatyard to get some work done and she had only been put back in the water a short time before they hit a reef or a rock. The rocks truly had a heyday with Ragtime, and they said she has now been written off as salvaged. Poor Dave and Karon—they have no insurance.
On a brighter note, the GoFundMe page is up to $3,500 now, up from the $650 when we first saw it! Their friend, Kate, started the fund and is trying to raise in excess of $10,000 to help cover some of their massive salvage and cleanup costs.
Turning a Corner to Happier Notes
To shift to a happier note, Allison and John took us over to see their own boat, which has been at the yard since last September. They have a Catalina 30—a very popular model, and we’ve met quite a few people who cruise in them.
After spending some wonderful time relaxing and trading sailing stories at their boat until about 1:00 PM, we decided it was time to head back toward the marina. We went straight to The Boardwalk for lunch and finally had those award-winning fish and chips we were so craving last night. You’ve got to get them when you can, right?
On our way back, we paid up for another night at the marina, then headed to the little store behind the hotel to see if they carried coconut tequila. Success—they did!
We also stopped at the local gift shop. I am such a sucker for those kinds of places, and I ended up buying a sterling silver fiddle ring inscribed with music notes. A fiddle ring (or spinner ring) has an outer band that spins around the inside band, so you can fiddle with it when you're nervous or just in a fiddly mood!
The woman who owns the shop mentioned she has been there for 29 years and said she might not be there next year if we come back through. I’m glad I stopped in when I did.
I took my new ring, our coconut tequila, the sourdough bread and a date square (which I forgot to mention earlier!), and the rest of my cinnamon bun, and we dinghied back over to Lil' Ollie. Artemus was patiently waiting for us, tucked away in the V-berth.
We originally planned to head back ashore to do some laundry, but then I thought, we don't really need to do laundry right now, and it's a beautiful, sunny day. Why not just spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing on the boat? It gave me the perfect opportunity to catch up on my post for today, so here I am!
